Photos on Glass

I saw this artwork by photographer Amanda Weil, in House Beautiful and I thought the idea of a transparent or translucent image printed on glass was intriguing.  Old daguerreotypes were printed on glass, so the idea could be adapted for some very steampunk images.

Weil makes furniture and screens as well as wall art, but for the DIY photographer, I'd look into Fracture.  You can get an 18 inch diagonal print on glass for $35.  According to their FAQ, "You'll be able to select "No Mount" for just the opaque printed glass or "Transparent" for the printed glass without any white background."  I think that, paired with a sepia or black and white toned photo, would make for a impressive wall.

Zeppelin Inspired Loft

Have you seen this Chelsea loft?

Zeppelins are the overarching inspiration -- including a wrecked one on the way to the bedroom.

It could be yours for just $1.75M!  Here's the listing, with more pictures.  (There's an open house this Sunday, if you live in the area.)  More pictures at the Wall Street Journal.

Thanks to Diana Peterfreund (who writes *killer* unicorn stories) for pointing this out.

One Shot Coffee

I thought this space, The One Shot Coffee Shop in Philly (found via a post on Apartment Therapy), was beautiful.

Reclaimed wood and tin tiles.

The menu changes daily.  So does the kraft paper roll.  I love this idea -- wonder where you could use it in a house?
The "card catalog" style drawers are for tea.

Check out the entire post on AT, including closeups of the awesome tea drawer labels.

Lighting of the future, pretty enough for your antiques.

The only energy efficient lightbulb that I'm tempted to put in my home -- wouldn't this look great dangling from a Edison chandelier

By Switch Lighting, this LED bulb is supposed to put off the same yellow toned light as the incandescents we've grown up with.  It should be available in stores in October.

New term: "Vintage Rustic"

In this "everything is google-able" world, sometimes all it takes is the right words and new worlds open up.  Case in point is this post from 2008 where I learned that "scissor arm lamps" are another name for "concertina arm lamps," and all of a sudden I could actually find (and purchase) the lamps I wanted on eBay.

So I've been hanging out on a new visual bookmarking site called Pinterest (warning:  totally addicting if you like pretty pictures) and I noticed a new label on some of the home design shots I liked:  Vintage Rustic.  No, it's not entirely steampunk, but you'll like it for the combination of natural materials and vintage items, and it might help you as you search for inspiration and items that suit your fancy.

My favorite board on Pintrest is Rustic Chic.  And if you get into the whole Pinterest thing, make sure you follow the Steampunk Home board I curate.

Apothecary Bathroom Inspiration at AT

Kelmit pointed out this roundup over at Apartment Therapy -- I like the idea of the linen shower curtain and the succulents in tea tins!

The Canale's Home on DesignSponge

I liked the home of Kimberly and John Canale over on DesignSponge.  Here's just the two most steampunkish bits.

More Steampunk Flowers

Easter Arrangement by saracarl
Easter Arrangement, a photo by saracarl on Flickr.

Although not as cool as the wedding arrangements posted earlier, I thought I'd share my Easter arrangement.

In my little fantasy world, a resolutely single mad scientist absentmindedly tucked these lilies into a flask of alchemical experimentation rather than be distracted by her suitor's charms. (Yes, I'm weird like that.)

In reality, there were a bunch of Costco lilies, in a florist vase I picked up for its chemical lab styling, with water colored with food coloring to match the flowers.

Have you seen any other steampunk flower arrangements?

Steampunk Libations

We picked up some of this Zeppelin Beer, and while the beer connoisseur in my house wasn't that impressed with the taste, the label design is pretty spiffy.

I haven't tried this one yet, but Kraken Rum has an incredible label, website, store of related products (including for the home), and videos.

Have you seen any another Steampunk libations on the shelves of your local purveyors?

Reinventions at Thomasville

I've got a special surprise today -- Elisa Johnson is a reader who has an eagle eye for steampunk finds; today we have a post she wrote on one of her recent finds.

Ladies and Gents, I think we may have hit the mainstream.  Shocked and pleased to see Thomasville’s new line called  Reinventions.

The line must be targeted right as us with a name like “Boulton and Watt Flip top Sofa Table”
It’s a 36x60x20 sofa table by day but can be completely altered to become a quaint dining table for 4 at night.
Apprentice Adjustable Activity Table transforms from 20” high coffee table to a 30” high breakfast table.

My personal favorite is the “Reliance Pharmacy” which would make a fabulous Cabinet of Curiosities or My New Bar.

Finds from Cost Plus World Market

Our Aesthetic is trickling down to some of the more affordable retailers -- Ingrid at GreyShade Estate pointed out the Aiden line at World Market, and while I was browsing there I also found their Campaign line.  Check out the finds below.

Cement Factory turned Live/Work Space

Showing that this industrial/traditional blend is not new, Yatzer blog features an old cement factory turned architect Ricardo Bofill's office and residence in Madrid that dates to 1975.

There are many more pictures at the original post.

Thanks, Elisabeth, for pointing this out.

Maker on Wheels

You know Roger Woods and Klockwerks, right?  He was steampunk before steampunk even was...  Here's a great video his assistant Bryan Belanger made of Roger making one of his klocks on wheels.  (I *love* the soundtrack.)
