New term: "Vintage Rustic"

In this "everything is google-able" world, sometimes all it takes is the right words and new worlds open up.  Case in point is this post from 2008 where I learned that "scissor arm lamps" are another name for "concertina arm lamps," and all of a sudden I could actually find (and purchase) the lamps I wanted on eBay.

So I've been hanging out on a new visual bookmarking site called Pinterest (warning:  totally addicting if you like pretty pictures) and I noticed a new label on some of the home design shots I liked:  Vintage Rustic.  No, it's not entirely steampunk, but you'll like it for the combination of natural materials and vintage items, and it might help you as you search for inspiration and items that suit your fancy.

My favorite board on Pintrest is Rustic Chic.  And if you get into the whole Pinterest thing, make sure you follow the Steampunk Home board I curate.

  12. My wife, who is a columnist, and I are about to move and we have decided to decorate in a style we have dubbed "romantic industrial" See her brief article about it here:

    http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2011/jul/05/diva-romantic-industrial/

We found a dining table at West Elm, and a ceiling light fixture at Restoration Hardware (which actually looks even cooler in real life than it does in the catalog).

Anyway, I have made a "Romantic Industrial" photo album/swatch book where you can see photos of these, as well as some of the other items we will be putting in our new place, including a college desk chair from the 1800's (I actually sat in these to take calculus!), a baroque chair, and some cool artwork. You can view the album here:

  14. Hi Sara,

I've been getting your posts via email and sometimes after my ooh's and aah's, I forget that I intended to come to your blog and let you know how much I enjoyed your post!

I just applied for Pinterest and LOVE the collection of images you've posted there. Thank you for putting all this awesome, geeky, STEAMPUNK beauty in one place (with links, no less).

I'm moving to an apartment in a streamline moderne designed home. It's not steampunk--but it could be (I actually have a porthole window! YES!). I will be looking forward to inspiration from you and your blog.

    Thanks again for everything!

    I.

  16. Oh, I was on a (defunct?) site called Sproost a while ago, and you can go through a quiz (picking images you like) and it will give you a "design type" based on what you like.

I came up as "Rustic Revival," which is very similar to "Vintage Rustic."

    More search terms! :)
