I believe that Steampunk is more than just brass and watchparts. It's finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic pleasing yet still punkish way. It's living a life that looks old-fashioned, yet speaks to the future. It's taking the detritus of our modern technological society and remaking it into useful things. Join me as I search for items for my house that combine the scientific romanticism of the Victorians with our real present and imagined future.

Copper Flooring
Can you tell what this floor is made of?
That's right. Pennies!
How awesome is that? This is the floor of the Standard Grill, in the Standard Hotel in New York. And why does it not surprise me that it's by my favorite designers in the world Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch at Roman and Williams?

Awesome!
That is pretty awesome. I wonder how much per square foot in comparison to regular flooring.
Wonder how they got the spacing even. Template? A grid of chalklines? Lasers? Mark I Eyeball?
Of course, the other problem is that pennies are no longer copper. I hope they've got a good layer of acrylic over these to keep the plating from wearing off
I saw something like this on craftster or apartment therapy awhile ago. The person used the same backing material you'd use on mosaic tiles, printed out a template so the pennies would be evenly spaced and then glued each penny to the back material. Tedious tedious work, but her space she used it in was lovely. She said she put some bar counter stuff over the top for protection.
So that's where they all went?
Mighty awesome!!!!
Government subsidized flooring :)
What a great use for all those worthless pennies!
