I believe that Steampunk is more than just brass and watchparts. It's finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic pleasing yet still punkish way. It's living a life that looks old-fashioned, yet speaks to the future. It's taking the detritus of our modern technological society and remaking it into useful things. Join me as I search for items for my house that combine the scientific romanticism of the Victorians with our real present and imagined future.
That's Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavik. I'm not Christian so I never attended it but I lived just behind it when I lived in Iceland.
It was designed to reflect the volcanic landscape of Iceland. And though I'm not sure if it was intentional, from the front it has the profile of many Thor's Hammer pendants from the Viking Age.
The church is also the inspiration for Valhall in Marvel's new Thor movie.
Hello! I'm a sophomore illustration/graphic design student, and I'm doing a pretty cool series of infographics on steampunks and the steampunk subculture. I was wondering if you would be so kind as to spread a very short survey around, as I'll need as much information as I can get on this subculture. I've also designed a series of steampunk-oriented icons, and if you're interested, I'll gladly give you full access to use them as you wish. :)
Thanks so much!

Great post, Sara!
ReplyDeleteI also like the "Techo-Gothic" title that you've invented for it.
ReplyDeleteThe sound in there must be amazing.
