I believe that Steampunk is more than just brass and watchparts. It's finding a way to combine the past and the future in an aesthetic pleasing yet still punkish way. It's living a life that looks old-fashioned, yet speaks to the future. It's taking the detritus of our modern technological society and remaking it into useful things. Join me as I search for items for my house that combine the scientific romanticism of the Victorians with our real present and imagined future.

The Morning Star Cafe
I just got an email from J.D. Ray with pictures of his cafe in Portland, which has recently reopened in a new space with a steampunk inspired decor. (My plans for world domination march forward, as J.D. says "the pictures, projects, and general ideas on things that you've posted on your blog were instrumental in us developing the decor for our cafe.")
The cafe features warm coloring, fabulous light fixtures, and a lovely gear laden mural.
Thanks for sharing, J.D. -- I know I'll be visiting next time I'm in Portland!
Very cool. I wonder if any of JD's patrons recognize the style.
ReplyDeleteIf it were mine, I would have tables with clockwork gears under the glass tops. You could DIY it, get clock gears in lots on ebay, wouldn't cost much and it would look amazing, as each one would be different.

ReplyDeleteDidn't know how else to "share" this. But thought everyone would appreciate it.
Man now I want to move to Portland OR even more.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason for me to visit Oregon!
ReplyDeleteAlice, that is wicked cool!
ReplyDeleteLucky me, who lives in Oregon and can go there when I'm in the "big city." Found you through Don. It's not every day you "meet" someone who inspired a restaurant. If I inspired one, there would be soft, downy beds, big pillows and everyone could wear pajamas and no makeup. But someone would be busy changing the egg yolk and coffee stained sheets. - Jeanne in Oregon

ReplyDeleteI may have to jostle myself over the river and rustle up a cup of joe! (yes-I do live in PDX)
I wonder if they would show my Victorian SteamPunk Mech that I just completed?
Oops! My mech is at http://www.1stdibs.com/furniture_item_detail.php?id=271975 on flickr or at phillipvaldez.blogspot.com
